THE CONSTRUCTION PHASE
Turning the desert into a wildlife sanctuary took many years of work and lots of water from Artesian Wells

Turning the desert into a wildlife sanctuary took many years of work and lots of water from Artesian Wells. Homesteaders came to Summer Lake and found the availability of "Artesian" water. They discovered, after much hard work, that the alkali soil, uncertain weather and many other adverse conditions were too great for the free flowing water to overcome.

The deserted wells did provide the beginning of wetlands, which have attracted wildlife since that time. Edmunds Well Wildlife Sanctuary is fortunate in having the use of water from three of those wells. Without that luxury the Sanctuary would not exist.

It might be noted also that we are on some special fly way for birds Out of 640 acres of desert there is now 300 acres of beautiful water, ponds, and wetlands for wildlife and visitors to enjoy.  It might be noted also that we are on the Pacific Coast Flyway.
